David was born April 14, 1961, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and a graduate degree from Harvard University. David worked in Washington DC as a legislative aide to a member of the US Congress, concentrating on farming and monetary trade issues.

In 1990, David graduated with his law degree from Emory University Law School, where he was a National Moot Court Champion. His legal career has focused on litigation and trial advocacy. He is the recipient of the American College of Trial Lawyer's Medal for Excellence in Advocacy, and he has taught trial advocacy courses at Emory University Law School.

David also served as the legal advisor to the Special Judiciary Committee of the Georgia Legislature.

Mr. Hughes joined the law firm Jones & Granger in 2001, where he represents injured railroad workers throughout the eastern US.
